What is IDN?

IDNs are the domain names that include nonascii characters. Standard domain names support a very limited character set and cannot include any other characters other than a-z, A-Z, 0-9 and '-' character. This restriction is a major obstacle to register domain names in native languages.

IDN substructure and procedure.

The standard of IDN is not a system that is intended to change the existing substructure of domain name system but to enhance it. It provides algorithms that transform ASCII coded domain names to Unicode encoded domain names and vice versa. For instance, when a user write 'çaglayan.web.tr' on the web browser, it finds the ASCII encoded representation of the 'çaglayan.web.tr' and query about it to DNS by using the mentioned algorithms. In order not to alter the existing substructure, IDN expects the client to handle the conversion (browser in this particular example). In fact, users do not register the exact domain name that they wish! The system registers the ASCII representation of the IDN. If users registers 'çaglayan.web.tr', they actually register 'xn--alayan-vua36b.web.tr'.

In order for the IDN system to work efficiently, clients need to support them, in other words, clients must recognize IDNs and convert them to ASCII encoded representation. Currently most of the web browsers support IDNs. Firefox and IE7.0 fully supports them while IE6.0 requires a patch. E-mail clients do not fully support IDNs yet and thus, it is not recommended to use them for e-mails. Clients -if support IDNs- can also be used for e-mails and other operations.

IDN at NIC.TR

It is not possible to register 'çaglayan.web.tr' or 'çiçek.web.tr' with our current system through www.nic.tr web page. Nevertheless, with effect from December 4th, 2006 nonascii character encoded domain names, including Turkish characters like "ğ", "ı", "ü", "ş", "ö", "ç" , can be registered. In time, it is our plan to support different languages.

What is not IDN?

IDN is not a system that intends to change the existing substructure of existing domain name system!

It aims to enable the users to register the domain names that cannot be registered in the current system. Hence, IDN does not affect working substructure (internet standards, DNS substructure etc.) and works as a layer on the existing substructure.
